How Far Along
Is My Baby?

Week 20: How Far Along Is My Baby?

By the fifth month of pregnancy, your baby is 12 inches long and weighs about one pound. Hair may be starting to grow on the head. Even though many important inside parts of the baby such as the heart and kidneys are well developed, the baby cannot survive outside the mother at this time.

If you haven’t felt the baby move yet or the doctor has not heard the baby’s heartbeats yet, these should happen soon. Your doctor may decide to do a simple test now or in a few weeks. This test, a sonogram, helps us see if the baby’s age is what we think it is based on your last period. This is not an unusual occurrence, so don’t become worried if the test is ordered.
