Preconception Care to Help Your Family Grow

Preconception CounselingCaring for your physical and mental health before becoming pregnant is important for you and your future baby’s health. This is why Moreland OB-GYN offers preconception counseling and care as a vital first step for women and couples who wish to get pregnant.

The goal of preconception counseling is to provide health education and promotion so a woman can maintain a healthy lifestyle and reduce the risk of a poor perinatal outcome.

Preconception services allow our staff to take the time to discuss your overall health, including any issues or concerns. Your medical history will be reviewed in detail as we work together to create a plan for a healthy and successful future pregnancy.

Preconception Counseling

If you’re looking to start a family, the best way to begin is to schedule an appointment with your doctor and ask any questions you have before you begin the conceiving process.

At your preconception visit, your doctor will walk through several medical history questions, including:

  • Menstrual cycle history
  • Past medical and/or surgical history
  • Allergies
  • Vaginal infection history
  • Sexual history
  • Mental health history
  • Past pregnancy history (from you and your partner)
  • Family history (from you and your partner, for genetic diseases)
  • Current and past medications (including vitamins and supplements)
  • Social and lifestyle history (diet, smoking, alcohol, drug use, and caffeine intake)

At this appointment, your doctor will educate you about the signs of ovulation and how to detect your most fertile time. Your doctor may also perform a pelvic exam as well as an overall physical exam to check your heart, lungs, thyroid, blood pressure, and weight.

Lab tests may also be taken to check for known or unknown diseases and conditions that may complicate pregnancy. Preconception tests and screenings may include:Web page Images (1)

  • Diabetes screening
  • Gynecological and hormonal conditions (PCOS, Endometriosis, etc.)
  • STD testing
  • Thyroid testing
  • A pap smear
  • Complete blood count
  • Hepatitis and rubella testing

A preconception consultation is a great way for your doctor to understand more about you and help you prepare your body for optimal fertility and pregnancy. You may be advised to make several lifestyle and healthcare changes, including changes to your diet, vitamin intake, and management of any health problems and chronic conditions.
