ART_ASSETS_LOGOS_ACCRED_FINALS_AREAS_SEAL_2022-2025 (002)An ultrasound scan is an imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the body’s internal organs. At Moreland OB-GYN, we offer a full range of advanced ultrasound services for pregnancy monitoring, fertility evaluation, and gynecological health.

Our ultrasound team uses the most advanced technology, including 3D and 4D imaging. All ultrasound exams are performed by AIUM-accredited sonographers and read by our accredited gynecologists.

What Is an Ultrasound Test?

An ultrasound test, also known as a sonogram, is a safe, radiation-free imaging technique used to capture detailed images of internal organs, reproductive structures, and fetal development. This non-invasive procedure allows healthcare providers to examine the body without the need for surgery or other invasive measures.

Ultrasound works by sending high-frequency sound waves into the body. As these waves bounce off internal structures, they create echoes that are recorded and translated into real-time images. These images provide valuable insights into the condition of organs and tissues, helping with diagnosis and monitoring.

Types of Ultrasounds

  • Obstetric Ultrasound – Monitors fetal growth, detects pregnancy complications, and confirms gestational age.

  • Gynecologic Ultrasound – Evaluates the uterus, ovaries, and pelvic health conditions such as fibroids, ovarian cysts, and endometriosis.

  • Sonohysterogram (Saline Infusion Sonography) – Assesses uterine abnormalities, polyps, and fibroids.

Depending on the type of ultrasound scan, a transabdominal or transvaginal approach may be used.

  • Transabdominal Ultrasound (External Ultrasound): A gel is applied to the abdomen to help the ultrasound probe capture clear images. Commonly used for pregnancy ultrasounds and general pelvic exams.

  • Transvaginal Ultrasound (Internal Ultrasound): A thin, lubricated probe is inserted into the vagina for clearer imaging of the uterus, ovaries, and cervix. Often used for early pregnancy assessment, fertility evaluations, and diagnosing gynecological conditions.

How Do I Prepare for An Ultrasound?

Although an ultrasound is a simple and non-invasive procedure, proper preparation can help you feel more at ease and calm any nerves. Here are some key steps to follow before your appointment:

  • Follow Your Provider’s Instructions: Your healthcare provider will give you specific instructions based on the type of ultrasound you need. Be sure to follow these carefully for the best imaging results.

  • Drink Water if Needed: There is no need to drink a certain amount of water before the test. You should try not to urinate before the ultrasound unless instructed to do so by your sonographer.

  • Wear Comfortable Clothing: Loose-fitting clothing makes it easier for the technician to access the examined area. You may also be asked to wear a gown during the procedure.
