Cesarean Section Procedure

A cesarean section birth, or also known as a "C-section", is the delivery of a baby through incisions that are made in the mother's abdomen and uterus instead of the baby delivering through the vagina.

Reasons for a cesarean birth includes, but are not limited to the following:

• Failure of progression in labor — contractions may not be opening the cervix enough for the baby to move into the vagina.
• Concern for the baby — the umbilical cord may become pinched or wrapped unusually.
• Multiple pregnancy — the number of babies a woman is having increases the likelihood of having a cesarean birth.
• Maternal infections or medical conditions such as high blood pressure
• A very large baby
• A situation in which the baby's feet or buttocks would be born first — a breech presentation.
